What is Retirement Planning?
To start, let’s define what retirement is. It is a time in life when someone decides to leave work behind permanently. Typically, the retirement age is somewhere in the 65-year-old range. At least, it is in the U.S. where there is a pension or benefits system to help with retirement income. In the U.S., specifically, there is the Social Security Administration (SSA) to support retirees with monthly income benefits. All things considered, retirement normally requires a plan.
So, let’s then define ‘retirement planning.’ When retirement is approaching, one should plan to pay down debt, contribute to any retirement accounts, and assess all assets. Retirement planning prioritizes goals for retirement and then what’s necessary to achieve them. The sooner this planning begins, the better. It may include saving money, identification of expenses, potential sources of income, or available assets, and managing it all in ways that meet a future retirement goal. There are also tax-advantaged retirement investment solutions to consider. With this all in hand, a retirement goal can be reviewed against the combined positions to see whether or not that goal is possible and in the ‘life timeline’ proposed. Regardless, a strategy and a discipline for getting to one goal or another can now be put in motion.
